The FNArena news service will be taking a break for the next two weeks, including the regular Friday “Next Week At A Glance” and Monday “The Week Ahead” series. We therefore offer this preview as a summary, noting that important events will continue to be updated on the FNArena calendar.<\/p>\n
Next week begins with a Boxing Day holiday-in-lieu on the Monday for Australia, New Zealand and the UK. It is not a holiday in the US. The only economic data release of note for either Australia or New Zealand next week is the RBA’s monthly credit data on New Year’s Eve (Thursday).<\/p>\n
The US will see the Dallas Fed manufacturing index on Monday, the Case-Shiller house price index and the Conference Board consumer confidence measure on Tuesday, and the Chicago purchasing managers’ index on Wednesday. There will be auctions of two-, five- and seven-year US Treasury notes on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, the ASX will close at 2.10pm Sydney time. Japanese markets will be closed all Thursday. Friday is New Year’s Day, and all global markets of significance are closed.<\/p>\n
Life begins anew on Monday, January 4, except in New Zealand which takes a holiday. Australia sees November building approvals data on the Wednesday and November retail sales and trade balance on the Thursday.<\/p>\n
The US has a big week, which includes performance of manufacturing and performance of services indices, factory orders, vehicle sales, same-store retail sales and wholesale inventories. The minutes of the December Fed meeting are released on the Wednesday and the all-important unemployment data for December are released on the Friday. The UK makes a rate decision on the Thursday and the EU makes its final third quarter GDP revision on the Friday.<\/p>\n
Moving into the week beginning January 11, we start with a bang with the usual raft of monthly Chinese economic data – investment, inflation, production and retail sales – on the Monday. Australia will see housing finance numbers on the Tuesday and our own unemployment data on the Thursday.<\/p>\n
The US will see another week of longer-dated Treasury note auctions along with retail sales, industrial production and CPI data and the Fed’s Beige Book. The Friday brings the Empire State manufacturing index and the Michigan Uni consumer confidence series recommences for 2010.<\/p>\n
And that about wraps it up. “The Week Ahead” will return on Monday, January 11 and “Next Week At A Glance” will return the following Friday.<\/p>\n
