Unlike the ASX200 (XJO), BHP is not experiencing a shallow correction, and the volume has picked up here on the way down, so you would have to assume that the overall bias for the next few weeks is to the downside.

We can also see the stock coming out of a very overbought condition on the RSI (circled). There is support at $36.50, which is where it is now, but a breach of that could see it drift back towards $34.

Longer term, the share price action of BHP is looking much more positive than it did 6 months ago. So if we do see it back at $34, then investors should treat that as a buying opportunity.

*Potential Strategy

A short term bounce from this support level will give longer term holders of BHP an opportunity to write a covered call and take advantage of the shorter term weakness in the stock.

Content included in this article is not by association necessarily the view of FNArena (see our disclaimer).

Visit Michael Gable's website at www.michaelgable.com.au/.

After leaving Macquarie Bank's Securities Group in 2008 after many years of service, Michael has gained a highly regarded reputation in the financial services industry.
