unlike traditional, impermeable, implant materials.<\/p>\n<p>Anatomics founder <b>Professor Paul D&#8217;Urso<\/b> said<span id=\"spanHghlt4dab\">, <i>&#034;<\/i><\/span><i>custom ribcage reconstruction was a world-first application of the material, which has now revolutionised the way these surgeries are performed <span id=\"spanHghlt7eba\">to replace and repair people&#8217;s ribcages that are damaged by trauma, tumours or infection.&#034;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Previously surgeons used bone cement and wires to reconstruct the ribcage whilst the patient was on the operating table.<\/p>\n<p><i>&#034;StarPor<span id=\"spanHghlt6f84\">e<\/span><\/i><i><span id=\"spanHghltfe82\">&#160;i<\/span>s unique because it becomes &#8216;alive&#8217; within weeks, as the patient&#8217;s own cells grow into the strong, flexible porous scaffold. StarPor<span id=\"spanHghlteded\">e<\/span><\/i><i><span id=\"spanHghlt962a\">&#160;i<\/span>s also<\/i> <i>invisible on x-rays and scans, so that doctors can easily monitor the patient after surgery<span id=\"spanHghltf1b0\">,<\/span>&#034; <\/i>Professor D&#8217;Urso said.<\/p>\n<p><b>Dr Ahneez Ahmed<\/b>&#160;(Chief Thoracic Surgeon, Tan Tock Seng Hospital Singapore), reported after implanting the first two StarPor<span id=\"spanHghltc337\">e r<\/span>ibcages that they <i>&#034;<\/i><i>will last for a patient&#8217;s life span whilst keeping the same shape, with natural tissue holding it in place. <span id=\"spanHghlt5a41\">The material provides a scaffold for human tissue to grab onto and grow into, due to biological trabecular porosity similar to that found in the body.&#034;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Prof <span class=\"xn-person\">Shanda Blackmon<\/span> <\/b>(Thoracic Surgeon, Mayo Clinic <span class=\"xn-location\">USA<\/span>), summarises<span id=\"spanHghltf1b0\">,<\/span> <i>&#034;the advantages of the <\/i><i>StarPor<span id=\"spanHghlt0438\">e<\/span><\/i><span id=\"spanHghlte5b5\">&#160;<\/span><i><span id=\"spanHghlt6b82\">i<\/span>nclude flexibility, rigid fixation, ability to enfold ribs, customized 3D design, ability to easily drill holes for artificial ligament attachment, intraoperative customizable scalpel-shaping, ability to soak in antibiotic solution, and potential&#160;for revascularization.&#034;<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Dr <span class=\"xn-person\">Michael Harden<\/span> <\/b>(Cardiothoracic Surgeon,<b>&#160;<\/b>Royal North Shore Hospital Australia), recently reported that <i>&#034;the StarPor<span id=\"spanHghltc084\">e<\/span><\/i><i><span id=\"spanHghlt9490\">&#160;i<\/span>mplant allowed our patient to do things we take for granted whether it&#8217;s driving a car, bending over to pick something up, just taking a deep breath.<span id=\"spanHghlt3eb7\">&#034;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Anatomics is th<span id=\"spanHghlt3101\">e p<\/span>ioneer of ribcage reconstruction \u2013 having created the world&#8217;s first 3D-printe<span id=\"spanHghlt9423\">d r<\/span>ibcage for a Spanish patient in 2014.
